I’ve been living in the Portland, Oregon now for just on 6 months and whilst the experience has been amazing, the coffee is excellent and food great there are still a bunch of things I miss from Melbourne. Things I factor in when I come home to visit…….i.e; If I’m catching up with you we’re going to one of these places.
LAMB: It’s cheap, it’s good and people in Melbourne know pretty blood well how to cook it. Go to places are Jim’s Greek Tavern for Gyro, lamb shank pies at home or a sneaky grilled cutlet.
DUMPLINGS: ALL OF THEM! Shanghai Street is my favourite for XLB and wontons as well as Happy Lucky Dumpling House because old mate who runs it’s is an absolute legend. Good handmade noodles too.
INDONESIAN FRIED CHICKEN: If you know then you know that Ayam Penyet is the best thing ever. Poached spiced chicken that is cooled, smashed then fried. Served with tempeh, rice and sambal it’s JUST THE BEST OK.
A BRATWURST FROM THE VIC MARKET: Goes without saying.
MORETON BAY BUGS: Think a lobster made love to a shrimp = Moreton bay bug.
LBSS: When it comes to coffee, a decent breakfast or the ability to sit outside have Ron Swanson, smoke a cigar and drink a glass of BYO scotch this place has it all. Good crew running it too.
VIC STREET: My old stomping ground. So much good Viet food as well as a decent dodgy curry place and Yum Cha.
MINAMASHIMA: Officially ruined sushi for me. My #1 dining experience(no exceptions) Omakase at the bar is the best thing ever.
THE ROCKWELL AND SONS DOUBLE PATTY SMASH: It’s the best burger that ever burgered.
OAKLEIGH: It’s like Chinatown if Chinatown was Greek. Frappe in the sun at Nikos with a Galaktoboureko.
THE SMELL OF CIGARETTES: It’s a subtle thing but I really enjoy the feint smell of cigarettes at cafes and bars. Portland doesn’t have this.
